Overview

Presidency College of Nursing runs under the affiliation to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. There are four different courses provided by this college, General Nursing and Midwifery, Basic B.Sc. Nursing, Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing and M.Sc. Nursing. This college is also recognized by the Government of Karnataka and the courses here are approved by Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi and Karnataka Nursing Council, Bangalore, Karnataka. The curriculums of these courses in this college are prepared considering the development of the habits of scholarly thinking. The students tend to be highly encouraged and motivated by the theoretical and practical knowledge that these set of courses provide to them. All the courses directly help the students to grow from different aspects.

The college believes that an essential asset to the nursing profession is love and care given in the form of treatments and medicines.   • General Nursing and Midwifery
  • General Nursing and Midwifery is a diploma course of 3 years duration which is followed by internship of 6 months. The nurses of this field are in charge of taking care of women during their pregnancy and the post pregnancy period. The aim of this course is to render nurses who are highly skilled and qualified and who can contribute to the healthcare system as a crucial member.

    It is one of the specialized areas of nursing education. Nurses are trained to be compassionate and empathetic towards the patients. Midwifery is a field that is related to female health issues, during pregnancy, childbirth and after childbirth period. Nursing is a very noble profession. General nursing includes of general health care given in hospitals, clinics, school, colleges, military etc to sick people. The college provides adequate knowledge and training to the students to provide comprehensive nursing services to the sick people.

Under Graduate

  • Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing is an undergraduate course of 2 years. This course is taken up after General Nursing and Midwifery course by the students to upgrade their knowledge and skills. The course is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. The program is structured to prepare professional nurses who are competent and skilled.

    This course gives an advantage to the students to join Masters Course as they do not have to take one-year work experience like B.Sc. nursing course students. Immediately after this course, the students are eligible to take up M.Sc. nursing course. The students need to be registered nurses after a diploma program in nursing from Indian Nursing Council recognized Institute of nursing, to be enrolled in this course.

Post Graduate
  • M.Sc Nursing
  • Post graduate degree in Nursing is a 2 years full time course taken after completion of B.Sc. Nursing course. This course is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and is approved by Karnataka Nursing Council and Indian Nursing Council. Students who are interested in academics and research work take up this course. The program is implemented to produce capable nurses who work efficiently as an important member of the healthcare system.

    Students are also given option of 5 specialities under this course. The students are to submit a dissertation for the completion of the course. This program gives the students basic concepts for the future development of the graduates. The fields of specialization offered under this course are:

    1. Medical Surgical Nursing
    2. The specialization is done by the nurses who work in patient care units, ambulatory care units, surgical centers, emergency care units etc. The nurses of this specialization deal with health of adult patients. The nurses of this field are to study about medicines as well, as they are to look after the medication of the patients.

    3. Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing
    4. This area of nursing deals with women in their age from puberty till menopause. The nurses of this field give care to women who have health issues regarding their reproductive system like during pregnancy, child labor, birth etc. The nurses of this area work in maternity wards.

      The nurses are to pursue a diploma or a degree related to women’s health and obstetrics to become OB/GYN nurses. Minimum of 2 years of experiences is needed to sit for NCC Inpatient Obstetric Nursing certification Examination and become a certified OB/GYN nurse.

    5. Community Health Nursing
    6. The nurses trained in this area are involved in healthcare of the community. They work in rural and urban community healthcare centers. The community health nurses are responsible for the health of an entire community. To become a community health nurse, one needs to be a registered nurse by getting a degree and by sitting for the exam of National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. The nurses also need to have work experience for several years.

    7. Pediatrics Nursing
    8. This area specializes in giving healthcare to infants and children. The nurses are given training in giving care to children or infants with health issues. To practice nursing of this area, the nurses needs to be a registered nurse with a bachelor’s degree.

    9. Psychiatric Nursing
    10. also known as mental health nursing is a course where the nurses specialize in mental health and care for people who are suffering of mental illness. Nurses of this area get trainings in psychological therapies. A psychiatric nurse is required to be a registered nurse and specialize in mental health. This type of nurse work in mental institutes, psychiatric hospitals, mental asylums etc.

  • Candidates must have completed B.Sc. Nursing/ PB B.Sc. Nursing/ B.Sc. Hons. Nursing course
  • 50% marks in B.Sc. Nursing or PB B.Sc. Nursing
  • The previous college must be recognized Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences or any other University accepted as equivalent by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences
  • Minimum of 1-year work experience after B.Sc. in a hospital or community health setup
  • Candidates must be a registered nurse or registered midwife

Hostel

Presidency College of Nursing provides separate hostels for girls and boys. The accommodation service is given inside the college area. The mess is also served in the hostel with both veg and non-veg foods. Apart from the good facilities, there are strict rules and regulations that are needed to be followed by the hostellers. Some of the rules and regulations in the hostel are:

  • During the hostel hours, all the students should be in the hostel resident
  • Students are not allowed to stay with their relatives or friends
  • It is only once in a month that the students are allowed to visit their local guardian’s house
  • There should be an immediate report to the principal if someone falls sick
  • Written permission in needed to go outside the hostel and must be returned to the hostel by 6:30 P.M
  • No relatives and friends are allowed to visit during the duty or class hours
  • Use of mobiles, tape recorders, radios, TV and so on are forbidden
